Annoying things

First blog in a while again, just thought I'd post about things that grate me.

So apparently there has been a few complaints about the new Go Compare adverts. What I don't understand is how people who hate this guy to death are complaining about him being blown up. Isn't that a good thing? My complaint, however, is the fact that he is still even GETTING adverts. Wandering and driving around the city the past couple of weeks and have found the most amazing 'Go Compare' graffiti. I love how nothing is being done to combat it, it's fantastic! The new Go Compare billboards are up and the graffiti ranges from "Go away" to "Go jump off a cliff". You get the picture, it's quite amazing!!

I've had problems in the recent few weeks with people not being straight with me from the start and being all happy clappy with me instead. And then they completely back stab me when it comes to the crucial moment. I was bullied a lot in younger years so have learnt to be honest and straight with people. It's horrible how people can be otherwise.

Probably everyone around me has heard my rants about cyclists and my continuation to quote the Highway Code to everyone who (doesn't) listens. I am sick to death of almost being ran over by moronic cyclists who shouldn't even be riding on the pavement anyway. What's even worse are the ones who do it NEXT to a cycle lane. I've heard excuses such as "Don't have a helmet", "haven't got any reflective clothing", "don't have any lights fixed to my bike and it's getting dark." They are not good enough excuses to ride on the pavement. There is no excuse for riding on the pavement. There is a law against it due to pedestrian safety. I don't have the time of day for this.

Fifty Shades of effing Grey. Sick to death of it, it's perverted and crap, badly written and started off as Twilight fan-fiction. End of. Pile of shit.

Proms 2012

I really can't wait for this year's Proms! As luck would have it, the playing of Also Sprach Zarathustra coincides with my graduation evening, which is amazing because it is soooo epic! The piece is well known from the opening of 2001: A Space Odessey, which actually just missed out on my movie month thing. I thought I would include it on this here blog to help grow more accustom to it, like that's really needed anyway but you know what I mean!

Day 30 - Movie Month

Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea (2008)
This is a brilliantly magical film. If you haven't seen it, I recommend you watch the original Japanese. Don't get me wrong, the English dub has some big names (Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon and Tina Fey) but watching the English one means having to sit through the worst English dub of a theme song ever, and we have Disney to blame for that. But anyway, despite it all this film is amazing and recommended.
Here is the trailer.

Day 29 - Movie Month

My Neighbour Totoro (1988)
What a lovely, adorable film! The amount of times I've sat down and watched this and gone "awww" is uncountable! A lot of people say how it was the ultimate film of their childhood, it's so innocent. I wish I was one of those people, I feel like I missed out as I only discovered it quite late on, I think I was about 19/20 or something like that. But anyway, it's a really nice film and again the soundtrack is brilliant. The genius who is Joe Hisaishi has cracked it on this one. And him and Hayao Miyazaki (one of my ultimate favourite people!) have done a brilliant job. So proud.
Anywho, here is the trailer for you to watch.

Day 27 - Movie Month

 Battle Royale (2000)
A long time before The Hunger Games came out, the novel, Battle Royale, was released. Following on from the novel came a manga and finally the film of the same name. It's basically the same premise as The Hunger Games, in that kids are sent to fight to the death, with one survivor. And believe me, it makes The Hunger Games look like Peppa Pig.
EDIT: I also loved the soundtrack for this film, it's a nice mix of classical and original pieces and the version of Air on it is the best I have ever heard.

 Here is the trailer.

The list so far:
05) Battle Royale (2000)
06) Norwegian Wood (2010)
07) The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2009)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

Day 19 - Movie Month

Hope and Glory (1987)

This is such a heart warming story!! Set against the background of World War II, it looks at the Blitz in the eyes of a nine year old boy. I first saw this at school as part of a history lesson, so I'd really like to thank my teacher for introducing it!

Day 18 - Movie Month

Equilibrium (2002)
The first of the dystopian futures, this is set in an Orwell-esque world where people are not allowed to have any emotions and are constantly being watched. This film kicks real ass and should be watched.

Day 17 - Movie Month

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
I don't know what it is about this film, but it's my favourite of the series. It's funny, it's scary (giant spiders aaarggghhh!) and there's a house elf. Oh and Uncle Vernon falls out of a first floor window.
Here is the trailer.

Because we have now reached the top 15, I thought I'd give a quick glance and maybe some clues as to what's coming up!
4 foreign language films
6 animations
3 involving time travel
and 2 dystopian futures.
There is no horror, it's not that I don't like horror films, it's just not a genre a generally frequent. Having said that, Let The Right One In only just didn't make it here.
I've had some people guessing at what is in the list so far and you can keep guessing but some of the things I have been told are very very wrong. . .

The list so far:
15) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
16) The Great Escape (1963)
17) Star Trek XI (2009)
18) Schindler's List (1993)

The list so far:

Day 15 - Movie Month

Star Trek XI (2009)

There is one word that can describe this film, and I may probably get a few dislikes for it, but it's cool! And it was nice to see a little cameo from Leonard Nimoy as well.

And here's a bit of trivia for you. Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk) - who went on to do Thor and stuff - went into Star Trek off the back of the world famous Australian soap, Home and Away. So there you have it.

Here is the trailer.

  Jurassic Park (1993)

We are now into the top 20, yay! So things are starting to kick off, and these next few films are ones that came straight to mind when I was compiling this list so this is all me now.

Jurassic Park was THE film of my childhood. I watched it everytime it was on TV, and recall once getting annoyed when some friends came to the door asking me to play out, I only wanted to watch the dinosaurs!! I have now seen this countless times and am probably due another rewatch. Apparently they're on with number 4, again with Sam Neill, so we'll see how that works out!

Here is the trailer.

Day 5 - Movie Month

Mulan (1998)

Day 4 - Movie Month

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

I was once asked by someone in school if I was allowed to watch this, as it was one of those lessons whereit was the end of term and nothing new to learn or something. I was sat there thinking, are they actually taking the piss?
Anyway, reminiscing aside, I must admit that this film took a while to get into but it's now up here on my favourite films list so it can't be that bad really. Enough of my prattling, here is the trailer.

The list so far:
28) Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Day 3 - Movie Month

Fight Club (2009)

The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club!
And I needn't! This film needs no introduction. It's that great.

View the trailer now.

Day 2 - Movie Month

Fish Story (2009)

This one is awesome. It's basically the story of how one insignificant song can change the world. But decades later. It certainly must be watched to be believed and the songs in it are fab too!! I've posted the trailer here, enjoy!

My movie month - Day 1

I was asked a couple of months ago if I wanted to take part in a challenge. A challenge? I asked. Yes, you pick a different film each day of a given month on order of favouritism. Now, it was a bit harder for me to order my favourite films so they are a bit more general but the top ten at least are all my very favourites. Now, time to reveal the film for day one!!

The Pianist (2002)

I LOVE Holocaust and War films. I don't know what it is that attracts me to them but I am OBSSESSED. SUCH A FREAK! But anyway, there are few films that either make me cry or make me feel close to crying and this is one of them. But that is NOT what made me choose it! The screenplay is really well written and the direction is brilliant, well done Roman Polanski.

Here is the trailer for you to watch if you like, it's a beautiful little film and one well worth watching. (Just for copyright purposes, and it will obviously be the same with them all: I don't not own the pictures and sound, the credit goes out to the lovely people that made it. Thank you.) Enjoy.

The list so far:

Song of the last two days

You may have noticed my absence yesterday so I have two days to backtrack. But it's only one song so easy done!! This one is fantastic. Again it's by the amazing McFly. It's called Nowhere Left To Run. Clip is below as normal. Out.

Today's song

Today I had to choose Lies by McFly. I can't believe a full week has gone since my last McFly gig and already I am looking forward to the next one, as well as a possible fan club membership so I can meet them hehe. I deserve it, I've been a McFly fan for almost an entire decade and if that's not dedication then I don't know what is! I even got a certificate at school once saying "Most dedicated McFly fan!" and I was on the street team where they would mail out leaflets for me to give out (and decorate my school books with!). I still have them in my loft, alongside a pile of posters tied with a ribbon. I must retrieve it all. I had a load of stickers as well.

Anyway, back to the song!! They played this last week, which was fantastic as I love it. Lies by McFly. Happy times. Enjoy!!

notebooks

I recently found a load of notebooks I started writing when I was 15 or something like that. I started to keep track of favourite songs and make lists from it, a bit like a primitive version of last.fm (which I am on now, you can find me here). I started off writing a 'song of the day' in a diary and then from there make charts with regards to most favourited songs in a given period. From the diary I went into a notebook I had specially set aside for this song of the day and it shows a good example of the sorts of things that I was listening to a few years back. Some of which I would rather not associate myself with ever again (the offending albums have been binned).

Today I thought about starting it up again. I do like making lists and keeping things in order. I therefore have two days worth songs to catch up on.

Yesterday my most favourited song has to be Gloria by Canterbury.

The beauty of having my iPod on shuffle on long journeys is the variety of music that comes on and the first time this popped on I immediately fell in love with it. It's so beautiful.

Today's song I favourited is also beautiful. My beloved Björn Dixgård and Gustaf Noren have formed a side project away from Mando Diao called Caligola. After much aggravation over the appalling availability of music in the UK, I managed to get my hands on a copy of their debut album, Back To Earth - Thank you Germany for coming to my rescue once again. Now, I have prattled on long enough now that I had better plug the song!! Possibly my favourite song on Back To Earth this is called Morning Light. Words cannot describe how happy this song makes me feel. So amazing, thanks guys.

books I read this week

It's Friday the 13th of April. I've been travelling a lot these last couple of weeks so managed to fit in a lot of extensive reading. Here are what I got up to along with critic reviews:

Phantom - Jo Nesbo'Nesbo wrings out the tension, by turns painful and delicious, with consummate skill. The surprises come like an avalanche as the end nears, engulfing everything in its path, including Harry Hole.'
- Daily Express

Sputnik Sweetheart - Haruki Murakami
'Though Murakami seems to invite us to join him in a straightforward mystery adventure, he in fact does something much more upsetting. He frees us from his narrative in much the same way that his characters finally shake loose of one another - he sends us spinning, orbiting wildly. In doing so, he surely accomplishes the best, most unnerving job of fiction: to force you to look hard at the parts of yourself you never even suspected were there.'
- The Guardian

American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
'American Psycho is a beautifully controlled, careful, important novel which revolves about its own nasty bits. Brilliant.'
- The Guardian
South of The Border, West of The Sun - Haruki Murakami
'This wise and beautiful book is full of hidden truths, but perhaps this is its most essential one, unbearable though it may be to contemplate.'
- The New York Times
Karlology - Karl Pilkington
Happyslapped by a Jellyfish - Karl Pilkington

Those last two don't even need a review. Very very humourous is all that needs to be said.

Out.

Another one of those books I mentioned

Today I have chosen Sweden, The Swastika and Stalin because it is saving my life while I try and write.

Saved my life.
